Exterior Inspection
- Check for dents, scratches, rust spots, and misaligned panels.
- Look for paint inconsistencies, which could indicate past repairs
- Inspect the windshield and windows for cracks or chips
- Test headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals
- Open and close all doors, including the trunk, and ensure the locks work
- Examine tyre tread depth and wear patterns; uneven wear may signal alignment issues
Interior Inspection
- Examine seats and upholstery for stains, tears, or excessive wear
- Check dashboard warning lights when starting the car
- Test radio, Bluetooth, speakers, and touchscreen functionality
- Run air conditioning and heating at full power to verify operation
- Ensure power windows and mirror adjustments work smoothly
- Check for musty or damp smells, which may indicate leaks or water damage
Under the Hood
- Look for oil leaks, corrosion, and worn belts in the engine
- Check oil, coolant, transmission fluid, and brake fluid levels
- Inspect battery terminals for signs of corrosion
- Verify radiator and hoses are intact and not brittle
- Examine the exhaust system underneath for rust or excessive soot buildup
Test Drive Check List
- Listen for unusual sounds when starting the car
- Test braking, does it stop smoothly without pulling to one side?
- Ensure steering is responsive and doesn’t feel loose
- Verify smooth acceleration and gear shifts (manual or automatic).
- Drive over bumps to test suspension for excessive bouncing
- If possible, drive at higher speeds to check stability and handling
- Take your time, don’t feel rushed by the seller
